What hire purchase is
Hire purchase combines elements of renting and buying. You pay fixed instalments over an agreed term and use the vehicle in the meantime. The aim of this model is generally acquisition at the end. The instalments are usually credited towards this acquisition. This distinguishes hire purchase from rent-to-buy arrangements, in which the rental and the later purchase are separate.
The term is not used consistently. In tax and accounting law, for example, a distinction is made between genuine and non-genuine hire purchase. A hire purchase can therefore only be assessed on the basis of the specific contract.
